Coals in the Surat Basin are less thermally mature, compared to coals in the Bowen Basin, which implies lower gas contents. The image below shows the gas contents in the Surat Basin as a function of depth, using 86 test wells. Where the Bandanna is a productive formation in the Bowen Basin, production from Walloon Coal Measures is very productive in the Surat.
This dataset shows that gas content is lower than 10 m3/ton (daf) (353 scf/ton), except for a few measurements as shown below. This observation is similar to that of the Bowen Basin where low rank coals show gas contents lower than 10 m3/ton ( daf ) (353 scf/ton). The gas content generally increases with depth, but data are scattered.
Similar to the Bowen Basin, methane concentrations are generally 95% of better for the majority of coals
